Once Upon A Deadpool

This is a weird one to review… Deadpool 2 came out earlier this year. You can listen to our episode on it at https://www.piecingpod.com/2018/06/01/episode-12-deadpool-2/ to get a detailed idea of what we thought of it.
But it’s time for the holidays and what better way to celebrate than with a completely random PG-13 cut of the otherwise heavily R-rated superhero film, complete with a new framing story featuring Fred Savage parodying his situation from The Princess Bride… Say what now?
So you know how some Blu-Rays will have an Unrated cut of the film, or maybe a directors cut? And you know how there will sometimes be deleted scenes thrown around on the DVD? This is all of that combined… But also heavily censored. And the new stuff is better than it has any right to be. It’s all quite bizarre in a very meta way, but then that’s exactly what makes the Deadpool franchise so lovable.
To be clear, Deadpool was meant to be Rated R with a capital R, and seeing it chopped up and digitally neutered is a little bit of a bummer. But in place of the F-bombs and C-words and cocaine fueled mania, are some solid extra jokes and the aforementioned Fred Savage starring framing device in which he’s been kidnapped and Deadpool is “reading” the story of Deadpool 2 to him, which all work really well. It’s hard to say that it necessarily works as its own film… That is something that Once Upon A Deadpool is definitely not. And it’s not going to win over any new fans. And if you haven’t seen Deadpool 2 yet you should go see that first… But if you’re into this kind of humor, love Deadpool and can live without the curse words, there are a lot of laughs to be had. Now bring on that X-Force movie.
