On the 165th episode of Piecing It Together, I’m joined again by Josh Bell from Awesome Movie Year to talk about my favorite movie that I’ve seen so far this year… The criminally underrated The Kid Detective. Released to theaters only amid the pandemic and finally out on VOD, it stars Adam Brody as a guy who used to be the town’s cute kid detective, now faced with his first real, grown-up murder case. Puzzle pieces include The Big Lebowski, Inherent Vice, Under The Silver Lake and Mystery Team.Read More

On the 125th episode of Piecing It Together, Josh Bell stops by to talk about a stylish, unique debut from filmmaker Tayarisha Poe, the Amazon Original Selah and the Spades. It’s a film that flips the high school movie sub-genre by blending it with an almost organized crime style story. Puzzle pieces include Brick, Donnie Brasko, Rushmore and Mean Girls.Read More

On the 61st episode of Piecing It Together, Bee Garner from Filmotomy and JumpCut Online joins me to talk about the polarizing Under The Silver Lake. After an iffy premiere at Cannes, distributor A24 got cold feet, allowing it to leak online, then delaying it over and over until David Robert Mitchell’s follow-up to It Follows was dumped to VOD. Which sucks. Because it’s a cult classic in the making. Puzzle pieces include The Big Lebowski, They Live, Burn After Reading and Rear Window.Read More

On the 1st episode of a special episode series called Breaking It Apart, co-host Kris Krainock and I take a look not at a new movie and what movies inspired it, but at a classic movie and what movies were inspired BY it… And the first one we’re doing is the cult classic Coen Brothers’ film The Big Lebowski. The Dude. Walter. Donny. The Jesus. The Nihilists. Bunny. So many classic characters in such a beautifully complicated yet ridiculous story that blends dark comedy, modern film noir and stoners. The Big Lebowski has inspired countless films, and on this first Breaking It Apart special episode, we get into a bunch of them and what makes this film and the Coen Brothers themselves so special. Puzzle pieces include The Nice Guys, Observe and Report, Brick and In Bruges.
And for those keeping track of the Piecing It Together Podcast, just know that special series and episodes like this will continue to be a part of the future of the show, and we’ll continue figuring out the best way to brand them and tie them in to the overall puzzle theme as we continue doing them. While some special episodes will be a once in a while thing, Breaking It Apart will be a regular occurrence so we’re going to number them starting with this one.
