On this special episode of Piecing It Together, one of my oldest friends and fellow composer TJ Kross joins me to talk about our picks for the best Film Scores of the decade. This is a very special episode for me because I spent most of this decade chasing the dream of being a film music composer, so it’s obviously a subject near and dear to my heart.
Swiss Army Man
On the 98th episode of Piecing It Together, Bee Garner joins me for a Robert Pattinson reunion of sorts (she previously was on the High Life episode) with our conversation about Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse (also starring Willem Dafoe). This A24 film starts at crazy and just goes off the rails from there, masterfully acted and shot in gorgeous black & white. Puzzle pieces include The Shining, Persona, Eraserhead and Step Brothers.
On the 85th episode of Piecing It Together, Chad Clinton Freeman returns to the show to talk about the sweetest movie you’ll see this year, The Peanut Butter Falcon. A man with downs syndrome escapes from a hospital and goes on the run with a southern Shia LeBeouf as they travel the country to enroll in wrestling school. Puzzle pieces include Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Swiss Army Man, Wizard of Oz and Into The Wild.
On the 60th episode of Piecing It Together, Kris Krainock returns with a movie we both loved and have been waiting a long time to talk about. To Dust from Director Shawn Snyder, which we saw in theaters a few months ago, finally is out on VOD. It’s the story of a Hasidic Jew whose wife dies. Grief stricken, he enlists the help of a community college professor to help him figure out what will actually, physically and biologically happen to her body when it’s buried. It’s a weird one. Puzzle pieces include A Serious Man, Election, Eraserhead and Swiss Army Man.
